Job Description:

The Petit Institute for Bioengineering and Bioscience is seeking an experienced, full-time Research Scientist for the Marcus Center for Therapeutic Cell Characterization and Manufacturing (MC3M). The MC3M is bringing together bioengineers, bioprocess/ manufacturing engineers, and industrial engineers to work closely with cell biologists, clinicians, and industry partners to ultimately make cell therapy manufacturing reliable, reproducible and amenable for broad clinical use.  We are looking for a highly motivated and creative computer science engineer, bioinformatics or data analytic scientist to join this dynamic team and contribute from the beginning to establish MC3M as a premier authority of cell characterization, manufacturing, and scale-up process development. 

The ideal individual should will have experience in cell culture expansion and characterization (genome, proteome, biophysics, etc.). Most importantly, this individual should demonstrate flexibility and the ability to learn quickly in a newly established environment to help lay a strong foundation for success. Ideal candidates at would have completed a PhD in computer science, engineering, bioinformatics, statistics, biology with related experience; with minimum 1-2 years experience (including a post-doc) or have completed an MS with minimum 5-10 years experience. Some industry experience, especially in cell therapy or regenerative medicine research is preferred. Industry and/or research experience in GMP/GLP-compliant cell manufacturing production processes is a plus.


Major Responsibilities:

This position will lead data analysis efforts between large sets of characterization data and outcomes data, develop and maintain an appropriate database structure that incorporates Georgia Tech requirements and initiatives already underway at MC3M, coordinate efforts between researchers to acquire and analyze data, and educate MC3M researchers to effectively utilize and populate the database. 

In addition to the requisite knowledge of bioinformatics and data analytics, of particular interest is expertise in mesenchymal stem research and experience with mammalian cell culture and cell characterization. As the MC3M is a relatively new center, there will be a large amount of protocol writing and establishing SOPs. Organization, documentation, and self-motivation are key attributes for success in this position.


Basic Qualifications:


  • Degree in computer science, engineering, statistics, bioinformatics, or other quantitative discipline
  • MS with 5-10 years of experience
  • PhD with 1-2 years of experience


  • Exemplary communication and organizational skills
  • Ability to deliver results in a fast-paced cross-functional environment, in the absence of set procedures and oversight
  • Strong experience in cell-based biological research
    • Background in mammalian cell culture, bioreactor culture expertise, bioprocess monitoring and control experience
    • Cell characterization techniques (ex. Extraction, Isolation, and Analysis of Protein, DNA, RNA, Biophysical and Morphological assessments)
  • 3+ years experience with biological datasets and experience with bioinformatics, computational biology, machine learning, and statistics
  • Deep understand in one or more of the following: metabolomics, genomics, proteomics
  • Demonstrable proficiency with several of the following technologies: Perl, Python, Java, Matlab, R, C, C++, Unix
  • Thorough understanding of statistics preferred
  • Application of modeling and software expertise for analysis of big data on complex R&D efforts
  • Experience leading, planning, and coordinating multiple projects with multiple team members
  • Experience overseeing junior level researchers
  • Experience in start-up environments a plus
  • Experience in regulated fields a plus (knowledge of quality management systems and procedures)

  • Preferred Education: PhD in Computer Science, Engineering, Statistics, Bioinformatics or  related field
  • Preferred Work Experience: Research experience in cell therapy or regenerative medicine research, experience in GMP/GLP-compliant cell manufacturing production processes
