Research Scientist II or Senior Research Scientist

Bioprocess and Cell Culture Scale Development Focus

PVA #41192

Institution: Georgia Institute of Technology

College/Div/School: EVPR - Petit Institute for Bioengineering and Bioscience

Department: Marcus Center for Therapeutic Cell Characterization and Manufacturing (MC3M)

Branch Campus: Atlanta

New Position: Yes

Job Class: Research Scientist II or Senior Research Scientist; dependent on experience

Job Description:

The Petit Institute for Bioengineering and Bioscience is seeking an experienced, full-time Research Scientist for the Marcus Center for Therapeutic Cell Characterization and Manufacturing (MC3M). The MC3M brings together bioengineers, bioprocess/ manufacturing engineers, and industrial engineers to work closely with cell biologists, clinicians, and industry partners to ultimately make cell therapy manufacturing reliable, reproducible and amenable for broad clinical use.  We are looking for a highly motivated and creative bioprocess engineer or scientist to join this dynamic team and contribute from the beginning to establish MC3M as a premier authority of cell characterization, manufacturing, and scale-up process development.

The right individual should have experience in cell culture expansion and characterization (genome, proteome, biophysics, etc.) as well as exposure to and working understanding of GLP and GMP procedures. Ideal candidates would have completed a PhD in engineering, biology or related areas with minimum 1-2 years experience (including a post-doc) or have completed an MS with minimum 5-10 years experience, or a BS with minimum 10-20 years experience. Some industry experience, especially in cell therapy or regenerative medicine research is preferred. Industry and/or research experience in GMP/GLP-compliant cell manufacturing production processes is a plus.

Major Responsibilities:

This position will lead multiple projects, coordinate efforts between researchers, and support managerial duties. Details include but are not limited to: process development and cell characterization, potency assay development, assay and sensor development, setting up and maintaining a GMP/GLP-compliant facility, etc.

It is expected that this role will provide direction to junior level team members, overseeing laboratory maintenance and function and research activities. In addition to the requisite knowledge of cell manufacturing bioprocess development, of particular interest is expertise in mesenchymal stem research and experience with data analytic techniques. As the MC3M is a relatively new center, there will be a large amount of protocol writing and establishing SOPs. Organization, documentation, and self-motivation are key attributes for success in this position.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Degree in engineering, biology, or science-related field
  • MS with 5-10 years of experience
  • PhD with 1-2 years of experience

  • Exemplary communication and organizational skills
  • Ability to deliver results in a fast-paced cross-functional environment, in the absence of set procedures and oversight
  • Strong experience in cell-based biological research
    • Background in mammalian cell culture, bioreactor culture expertise, bioprocess monitoring and control experience
    • Cell characterization techniques (ex. Potency assay, Multi-channel Flow Cytometry, Extraction, Isolation, and Analysis of Protein, DNA, RNA, Biophysical and Morphological assessments)
  • Strong experience in large data documentation, organization and analysis (ex. R, Python, MatLab)
  • Experience overseeing junior level researchers
  • Experience in start-up environments a plus
  • Experience leading, planning, and coordinating multiple projects with multiple team members
  • Experience in regulated fields a plus (knowledge of quality management systems and procedures)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Preferred Education: PhD in Engineering or Biology or a related field
  • Preferred Work Experience: Research experience in cell therapy or regenerative medicine research, experience in GMP/GLP-compliant cell manufacturing production processes
  • Preferred Skills: See above
